Prop News : The PropPeople.com Newsletter Vol. 1, Issue 6 3/28/2000
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

Hello all,

Just got back from USITT the other day, and I'm glad to be able to tell
you that the conference was great! People were very excited to hear
about the web site, and I expect a lot more people to be joining the
newsletter and listserv in the next couple of weeks. I met a lot of really
cool people, including John Lavarnway, the new Vice-Chair for Props
in USITT and props master at Wright State University, Robin Payne,
the props master at the University of Delaware, and Randy Lutz, the
props master at Santa Fe Opera. The whole experience got me really
excited about the potential this site has and the really cool things that
we're going to be able to do with it in the next few years.

>A quick note about props and USITT

I wasn't expecting to find much in the way of programming for props
people, but I was pleasantly surprised! I attended several sessions
that I'll be giving reports on in the next few weeks. Randy did a
session on the Opera, John and others did a really nice session on
inexpensive solutions to common problems, and Rick Pallaziol from
Weapons of Choice did a great session on bladed weapon and
firearms safety.

I have heard that USITT doesn't hold much interest for many props
people, but I think that will change in the next few years. I was part of
many discussions on how we could get more props people involved
in the organization, and how we can make it more useful for the props
dicipline. John Lavarnway is really interested in increasing the props
presence in USITT, and I for one am planning on helping with that
effort. You'll see a lot of information and news about USITT in this
newsletter and on the site, and I hope that it sparks your interest
enough to give USITT a second look!

>University of Delaware has a Props MFA opening!

Robin Payne, the props master at the University of Delaware, is
accepting applications for entry into her Props MFA program. To the
best of my knowledge, this is the only Props MFA available in the US
(if I'm wrong, let me know!). This is just a quick note for now, to let
you know about the possibility and to let you start tracking down info
yourself. Robin hasn't sent me the details yet, but I told her I'd
mention it in the newsletter right away so interested people could get
the ball rolling. Look for a posting on the job board soon. For now,
here's the link for the University of Delaware Theatre web site:

http://www.udel.edu/theatre/

There is an online application on the site, so if you are interested I
would encourage you to apply as soon as possible. Delaware only
accepts new students into their props program every 4 years, so you
have a small window of opportunity!

>The discussion board link is fixed

I noticed today, as I'm sure many of you did, that the discussion
board link wasn't working. For whatever reason, the people at ezboard
decided to move the board to a different server. Evidently this
necessitated changing the URL of the board. You would think that
they might have sent out a note to board owners letting them know
that their link had changed, wouldn't you? That would have been
logical. But evidently that wasn't particularly important to them.

Between this and the really annoying advertising banners that they
have started placing at the top of all the pages, I'll be switching over
to a new discussion board format this summer. It should be much
more dependable, because it will be on my own host's server, and the
only ads you'll see will be direct sponsors of PropPeople.com. In the
meantime, I apologize for the inconvienence, and ask you to bear with
me, as this free service is all that I can afford for the moment.

To go directly to the board by the new link, use this URL:
